Ethnic Structure in Global Naming Networks

چکیده
In today’s multicultural society, there is a growing need to understand the detailed composition of different ethnic groups and the interactions between them. These large-scale group dynamics emerge from the aggregation of millions of ethnic self-identifications of individuals. Mateos et al. (2011) and others have begun to demonstrate the extent to which cultural, ethnic and linguistic (CEL) assignments can be inferred using ‘naming networks’ of forename-surname pairs of any population. In further developing this work, we construct a global personal naming network from over 300 million name records from 23 countries. We use this to detect distinct social and ethno-cultural clusters in the network using Louvain community detection algorithm, and examine the interactions between them by inspecting the network structure. The results reveal the degree of isolation, integration or overlap between different human populations, and hence provide new insights into studies on migration, identity, integration or social interaction around the world.

Agency, Structure and the Power of Global Health Networks
Global health networks—webs of individuals and organizations linked by a shared concern for a particular condition—have proliferated over the past quarter century. In a recent editorial in this journal, I presented evidence that their effectiveness in addressing four challenges—problem definition, positioning, coalitionbuilding and governance—shapes their ability to influence policy. The editor...

The development of information and communication technology as one of the most prominent components of the expansion of social networks has revolutionized the quantity, quality, and speed of information flow unprecedentedly. One of the important consequences of the discourse of globalization of communication is the expansion of virtual participatory politics, the politicization of ethnic, racia...

Personal naming practices exist in all human groups and are far from random. Rather, they continue to reflect social norms and ethno-cultural customs that have developed over generations. As a consequence, contemporary name frequency distributions retain distinct geographic, social and ethno-cultural patterning that can be exploited to understand population structure in human biology, public he...

We study the dynamics of the Naming Game [Baronchelli et al., (2006) J. Stat. Mech.: Theory Exp. P06014] in empirical social networks. This stylized agent-based model captures essential features of agreement dynamics in a network of autonomous agents, corresponding to the development of shared classification schemes in a network of artificial agents or opinion spreading and social dynamics in s...
